Impact of my product on the audience

The show overall is clearly well liked as you can see the positive reviews and the fan pages for it on different social media sites however I have only showed two of the fan accounts out of thousands. Even though there are fansites or fan accounts there are official ones as well including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The show is clearly popular if they are able to sell merchandise to their fans and they are able to to keep on adding more merchandise. However there are some bad reviews of the show but these bad reviews are mainly on the first season and if you have watched all the season you can see that season 1 is the worst. Season 1 has also put people of watching the rest of the seasons. Reviewers like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB have rated season 1 the worst out of the 4 current seasons. A lot of people enjoyed season 4 quite a lot and that is rated the best season in my opinion and a lot of other people think that too.

Below is two reviews from people on IMDb one of them being a good review but the other one is a bad review.

Representation
Power shows a lot of stereotypes in this show with an example being that it has the main character as a male and the two main female characters are both in love with the main male character.

As you can see from this poster of season 2 you can tell that they have decided to portray the main character with a male called Omari Hardwick.  These is a big stereotype when it comes to Film&TV as most films and TV shows have their main character has a male and it is starting to change now as a lot of TV shows are starting to have females portray their main character but Power has not done that and instead follows the stereotype created. I think the main character always dresses smart which could tell the audience he is a businessman  because of the suits he wears and the expensive accessories.

Also most of the characters are male with only a few noticeable females and all the female adults end up being love interests for the main male characters. As you can see on the poster you can tell the two woman either side of the central character are his love interests.

Another stereotype that is used is to do with the ethnicity of characters and that is that people with darker skin are violent and it does show that with a few of the characters but not all of them. They actually show some of them as innocent people and even though they portray some of the darker skinned characters they also do it with people with lighter skin as I believe the most violent and dangerous character in this series doesn't actually have dark skin.

In this poster you can also see that the characters are wearing expensive clothing which means whatever they do in this series it gets them a lot of money. There posture also shows that they  are quite confident in what they do and from watching the show that is a good representation.

The main stereotype that you can see from this photo is that the black man always gets arrested even if they didn't commit the crime. In this case he has been arrested for murder which he did not do in fact it was an FBI agent who killed his own but he is framing Ghost because of his skin tone.

You can see from Ghost's (left) face expression that he is worried/shocked about something and what he is shocked about is either his kids and his wife have come to his trial or he has a new lawyer. You can see from the posture of the guy on the right is that he is in charge and he overpowers Ghost whilst he is in this position, you can also see he looks confident and that he does not care about Ghost because of his standing posture and he has no expression in his face.

Legal and Ethical

 Parents Guide to Power

This show includes a lot of things that could cause legal issues and ethical issues depending on what the age required to watch it is and the age rating for Power in America is TV-MA which means it is for a mature audience so over the age of 16 or 17. They would have to make that age because of  some of the things in this show. If you follow the link you can see that the subjects profanity and sex & nudity are rated severe by IMDb as there is quite a lot of it and if you follow the link it goes into more detail on the subjects. Other subjects such as violence & gore and also frightening & intense scenes are rated moderate and mild because it does not occur that much but in my opinion I think violence & gore should be rated severe as well as the other two that I already mentioned.

To the left is a picture of a murder which relates to death and gore. It shows someone skin being ripped of and you can see blood now obviously it's not real but it looks convincingly real.

To the left is a picture of a sex scene within the shows but I decided to put stars over the picture.
This happens quite a lot throughout the show and this is the only one I could find where the woman's breasts weren't as clear. I feel like there should have been less of this in the show but if they wouldn't change that then they could change the age rating for the show.

Regulatory Body

I found out that the regulatory body for Power was OFCOM and they gave the show a rating of TV-MA which means the show is for mature audiences.
OFCOM would have given Power this because of the scenes that happens within the show and I still believe that they could be more strict on the age rating maybe a 21+ because the gore scenes and the sex scenes are very explicit in the show. The gore scenes include a lot of blood and damage to the body as in the picture above in the 'legal and ethical issues' section  shows the skin that was cut off the man's neck and a lot of blood whilst the sex scene in the other picture is really explicit but I covered the woman's breast but that scene is probably one of the least explicit sex scenes in the show.

The producers of the product would have had to change some of the scenes to have their product be allowed to the younger population because that is their target audience however I still think that the scenes are too explicit and I think the regulatory body could have done a better job in what age rating to give the show. The gore scenes would have been an issue for the regulatory body because some people are a bit squeamish about seeing blood or someone in serious pain and being seriously injured for example being shot or being stabbed.

The violent scenes that are in Power are not glamorised but instead they are actually done to impact the audience, some of the scenes I saw personally I wanted to look away because of the high amount of blood and amount of violence, they wanted the audience to see that violence is bad and it shouldn't happen but they also did not want to offend anyone by showing the violent explicitly. They try to also make the villainous characters look more villainous instead of trying to make the audience excited. I think that the violence in this show is very explicit and they do not try to cover it up or make it look less bad.

The sex scenes that are in Power are used to excite the audience, they do these by the angles they shoot them from and how long the sex scenes carry on for, however this means that the younger population below 16 are not advised to watch this show because of the amount of sex that happens and a lot of people say season 3 constantly has sex scenes. I think that there are too many sex scenes in this TV show and they don't try to cover up the woman's breasts in fact they show them every chance they get which is a reason why the age rating for the show is not low.

Even though there is a lack of gore scenes they are quite explicit but because of the lack of them I think that is why this show is TV-MA and not something like 21+  and even though there is a lot of sex scenes it clearly wasn't enough to get OFCAM to increase the age rating.

Comments

  1. discuss whether you think the show glamorises sex or violence and what techniques it uses to do this...are the audience supposed to think these things are cool /aspirational or are they used to impact the audience and represent the harshness of the villainous characters....this all impacts classifications....show your awareness of this
